About the Minnow
The Minnow is a single-handed training dinghy designed for children aged between age 8-14 (approx 55 kg).
Originally created by Rex Fettell in 1974, the Minnow was intended to be a simple, plywood dinghy that could be easily built. While competitive wooden boats are still in use, fiberglass foam-sandwich construction has become more common.
The Minnow class adheres to strict one-design rules to ensure that boats are evenly matched in terms of speed, durability, and cost-effectiveness. Recognised as a youth development class by Yachting Victoria, many champion and Olympic sailors began their sailing journey in the Minnow.
